Buddy, our Elf
I had never heard of Elf on a shelf until last month. It's a brilliant idea.Basically, it's a book about an elf that Santa sends to watch over your family before Christmas. Each night the elf returns to the North Pole to report to Santa how everyone was and returns to your house in a new location to watch over and decide if the children should be on the "naughty" or "nice" list.
Buddy, our elf showed up the other night. It's been magical ever since. All I have to say is "Buddy is watching" or "do you want Buddy to tell Santa that you're fighting with your brother" and they are instantly on their better behavior.
So if your family doesn't have their own "elf"- you can grab the book set for $30 at Barnes and Noble or you can do what I did and find an elf at a local store and just tell your kids what his purpose is.
The upside of the book is that you can register your elf and receive messages via email from the North Pole which my kids would think was very cool. The downside of the book is that it's $30 and may not get read that often after the initial introduction to the elf.
Finding an elf with bendable arms and legs is also nice so he can choose to dangle from odd places throughout the month.
We are thrilled Buddy is with our family and we're hoping for a month long of happy reports to Santa at the North Pole!

We love Elf on a Shelf! I just bought an elf and googled the poem that goes with him. This is our third year and the boys can't wait to see when he shows up. He usually appears on December first and brings a little surprise for the boys - a new ornament or something for our village. We move him every night and the boys think it's so fun to see where he shows up each morning. Which is actually a pain because sometimes we forget and I have woken up more than once in the middle of the night remembering to move him!
I LOVE this. I may have to find an elf when the christmas decorations go on cleqarance. Ethan isn't quite old enough this year, but next year will be fun to start.
We don't have the published version...but we leave our shoes out every night in Dec. and if there is a treat then the elf has given Santa a good report, but if he left a rock then the elf gave a naughty report....it's a (it has changed sightly)tradition which originates from Germany....
Love it! When Nick was little his mom made a little bed with a little quilt, pillow, sheets, and bought a little tiny glass cup and plate, and his name was Elvin, well Nicks mom gave us the stuff, so we have Elvin with us every year & kids think its cool that Elvin was around when dad was little too with the same bed. We feed Elvin a sugary treat and drink every night before the kids go to sleep, and Elvin writes them a note each night congratulating or telling the kids what he saw them doing, they EAT it up TOo!! We have never actually seen Elvin because he is so FAST and hides, the kids swear they see him! Sorry for the novel! Don't ya love the BRIBES!! What will we do after Xmas is over!!??
